It's been one of those days. The details are unnecessary apart from the general nod and consensus that anyone can relate. The clouds are gathering for a weekend that promises rain, and I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't glum myself. Which is why, when my dear friend Emily (MLE!) sent this song along to me (she performed it a couple of weeks ago at one of our Beatnik nights and it yanked at my heartstrings), the timing couldn't have been better. It's a lovely little confession, or maybe it's a plea...but either way, it's plaintive and yearning and it captures so many thoughts I have so succinctly. Whether your mood is walking on sunshine or eddying more in the realms of Stephin Merritt-style dolor, I trust you'll find this tune as poignant as I do. It's yet another showcase of her incredible talent, and I'm proud to share it with you.
Here are the lyrics, since they're a trifle hard to make out upon the first listen:
Please don’t hate me cause I’m leaving,
leaving you, my love.
It’s not up to me, my darling.
What’s the soul made of?
I must listen to my father
and my Lord above.
They both send me with good wishes.
They send me from my love.
