The Sessions

Since no name has (as of yet, anyway) been formally chosen, I'll simply refer to the following series of photos as The Sessions. Or perhaps it's a singular session, since I haven't been behind the scenes of the other sessions bookending the one you're about to see. Nevertheless, I've got some friends that you should meet. When they aren't saturating our lives with some other noble pursuit (nursing, schooling, arting, living, etc-ing), they occasionally make music. For the next two weeks (give or take, since some time has already passed) they'll be making music together. I'm foggy on the outcome, but I'm confident that whatever it is, it will be superlative.

Josh invited me to sit in on one of these sessions to observe what particular musical alchemy would be conjured up during my time there. I've been considering photography over the past couple of days, and despite the fact that the lazy dog in me can't help but fawn over technology, I'm also weary of its proliferation and immediacy. The Dennis Hopper exhibit at the MOCA had a role in this, as well as the fact that I simply get worn out looking at most of the photography bouncing around on the internet these days. Most of it looks pretty damn similar, due largely to the fact that the market is oversaturated and most of its newer participants are inspired only by the newness of what their artistic compatriots are producing.

I digress. That's an angry rant within the walls of a glass house just waiting to happen. My point is: I thought about how each of the people in these photos has come together, bringing who they are - nothing more,  nothing less - to the table. That's all you need sometimes. Or, if you're me, a camera, a fixed lens, some manual settings, and an interest in your subject.

Enjoy the Session(s).

une fille à Paris: Typhaine Augusto

We met Typhaine, the girl behind the blog Cuillère à Absinthe, during our second visit to Paris. She brought her own camera and snapped away while we finished our appointments with other bloggers, but when it came time to style an outfit, Typhaine whipped up a look that was equally inventive, original, and very, very French. She mixed pieces I'd never have thought to combine and I loved the way she paired a ladylike vintage hat with deconstructed cut-offs and a flannel. Read more about her musing on the Quiksilver woman on her blog

Quail's Girl of the Moment

I'm a girl of the moment over at Quail's blog. Check it out for a short interview with yours truly. I'll be shooting their Spring '11 line tomorrow and I'm excited - Quail shoots are always fun.

Arcade Fire - We Used To Wait

Well, they've done it again. Despite my usual ambivalence toward music videos, this one has me completely bowled over. Outstanding. Here's the version I made with my childhood address.

The Internets are awesome.

QSW Europe Video: Part I

Here's the first video* in the series of Beth's European adventure as the QSW Style Ambassador. You can catch a glimpse of me on there as well, schlepping my camera gear around Paris and generally bringing the next level of Cool to the City of Lights**

*Video by Michael Ingledew, a SoCal expat living in Paris - crazy how many Californians we encountered on our trip.

**Okay, no, not really the next level of anything except perhaps for sweatiness (humidity! Can't deal!)

Hot Heat, Cool Tunes

This music is how the weather feels.

The Girls In Their Summer Clothes / Pass Me By

When it's hot like this, I don't care about fashion, or work, or responsibility. Don't care about anything but the same stuff I cared about when I was a kid; popsicles, hoses, grass, shade, imagination. As an adult it looks different than it did when I was a tot, but the heartbeat is still there. Shorts, bare feet, beads of sweat, covering the neighborhood sidewalks in our footprints. Playing make believe looks different when you're a photographer, but it's not so different than those times as me being the older sister when I'd tell Jody while we were playing, "Now say this part. Good, now move the stuffed animal over there. Good, now say this--" Once a director, always a director. It's in my bones, folks. I prefer to think of it less as bossiness and more as big picture thinking.

Quotables

"I had just heard The Messiah with Mrs. Henry Allen Moe, and she said, "Don't you love the 'Hallelujah Chorus?'", and I said, "No, I can't stand it." So she said, "Don't you like to be moved?" and I said, "I don't mind being moved, but I don't like to be pushed.'"

Weekend Recap: Ghetto Fab

Not to brag, but...well, we made a hot tub out of a truck yesterday. Newbie had the idea, and we were all a few spiked Arnie Palmers in, so no one spoke up to stop him when he started dragging his big camping tarp toward Dave's Tacoma, and then no one seemed to mind when Charlie put his summer mix on, and nobody certainly objected when a fresh batch of spiked lemonade came out around the same time the back of the truck was filled with water. We threw our suits on and that was that. Tacoma Hot Tub, courtesy of your Long Beach Summer Fun Committee.
